Llanidloes Mast "live" · 16 December 04

02 refuse to answer questions on the status of the TETRA mast – though asked to do so by both MP and local doctor’s surgery.

Engineers for 02 were seen in the vicinity of Llanidloes, on 10th November, testing the signal strength of the Tetra mast. On 30th November, an area engineer working for 02, the company behind the Tetra masts, informed a resident that the mast in Llanidloes was “live”. The engineer did not say at what date the mast had been switched on.

Lembit Opik, MP, contacted 02 on the town’s behalf, to ask for
confirmation. Josh Berle, speaking for 02, refused to comment on whether the mast was live; a refusal which many in Llanidloes have said is disgusting.

“The company has treated our town with contempt,”

said a spokesperson for the Llanidloes Tetra Mast Protest Group.

“We apparently live in an open democracy, but our democratically elected representative is treated with insulting disregard by a company which obviously sees itself as more important than the MP.”

The local medical practice has also requested that 02 give them information about the exact date when the mast was switched on, because the information is needed by doctors to aid them in their medical diagnosis. The company has refused even to answer e-mails and phone calls from the surgery

“If people are reporting illnesses which could be related to the mast, the doctors need to know when the mast went live, and if it has been live continuously,”

said Barbara Richter, a traditional acupuncturist working in Llanidloes.

“I am very concerned by the company’s attitude. It is totally irresponsible, uncooperative, and amazingly arrogant. It makes me feel they must have something to hide – what are they fearing?”
